When Osamu Dazai was 21 years old, he met a married woman in Ginza Cafe and they lived together for three days, then took the sleeping pills to commit suicide by jumping into the water at Kamakura. Finally, he was saved but the 18 years old woman died. Hence, Osamu Dazai was charged with ''the crime of helping other suicide''; though he was free of complain, he created the Flowers of Buffoonery out of the sense of guilt from committing suicide together but letting the lover die alone. The Flowers of Buffoonery has the same hero Oba Yozo with No Longer Human. It tells the life of Oba Yozo in the sanatorium after being saved and the hero is young, impulsive and proud, thus different with the self-abased, timid and dispirited one in No Longer Human. In the novel, Osamu Dazai analyzes the heart journey of the seemingly decadent Oba Yozo surviving in the hopeless situation in his pinnacle work No Longer Human and reveals many secrets about writing.
