< Medieval cities > is a masterpiece of Belgian Henri Pirenne about history of cities in the Medieval Age. It was published in English in the United States in 1925 for the first time. The origin of the medieval cities attracted great attention of Western historians in the 19th century and early 20th century. Thus there were lots of theories about it ""Roman city"" theory""on hereditary territory "" , ""Mahlke"" theory, ""castle"" theory and the ""market theory"" and so on. Henri Pirenne combined the ""castle"" theory and ""market theory"". He said that city was the businessmens settlements around the fortified places - towns and castles, which was unique and influential.
