Yan Shu'poetry not only absorbed the style of Wen Tingjun) and Wei Zhuang, representatives of the Flowery School but also very much influenced by Fengyan Si, the poet of the Southern Tang Dynasty. His poetic style was characterized as combining beauty with calm and mixing joy with a profound sense of grief. The style of Yan Jidao, the son of Yan Shu, was romantic and strong while graceful and restrained. The achievements of Yan Jidao was as celebrated as those of Yan Shu, and hence the name of ""Two Yans from Linchuan"". Similar to his father's elegant style, Yan Jidao's poems were full of implicit words, but with deeper and more desolate emotions. Yan Jidao even wrote romantic poems better than his father. The ""White Rain fast Words"" written by Chen Tingchuo in the Qing Dynasty indicated that Yan Jidao's poems were full of words in a graceful and restained style, which was second to no one at that time""."" This book collects poems written by Yan Shu and Yan Jidao as well as comments made by later generation commentators, supplemented by simple and introductory notes of Mr. Zhang Caoren, which provides convenience for readers to have a better understanding of Yan Shu and Yan Jidao.
