Two threads run through this book: one is what he sees and hears on the way, his contacts and communication with the local people and becoming their friends. The second is his relationship with the Sichuan girl Xiao Xiang, who is studying in Germany. On his 26th birthday, Lake gave himself a most beautiful present: after living for two years in Beijing, he decides to go back to his hometown Bad Nenndorf on foot.
