This monograph studies the history of terms and concepts used in Russian works and textbooks on ethnography and anthropology of the 19th century for description of the "other," like "ethnicity", "nationality", "folk character", "type", etc. At the centre of the author's attention are 19th century essays on Poles and Finns. The author reconstructs the ethnic stereotypes of these nations in Russian culture. Bibliography.
