This book, Coercion, Capital, and European States (AD 990 1992), is a masterpiece of Charles Tilly. In the book, with 1,000 years of history in Europe, he explains the mechanism of the formation of the nation-states in Europe and that coercion and capital played a key role in the formation and development of the European countries. The Tilley believes the states use the coercive organizations. The formation of the states is inseparable from coercion. Capital can be used to buy coercive means, and therefore, it is essentially a resource of coercion. However, in order to facilitate the analysis, in this book, his makes a study of capital and coercion separately. The development of capital promoted the development of the cities. The development of the cities impacted the formation model of states. The different combination of capital and coercion formed different types of states.
