Against the background of the France governed by Louis XI., the book revealed the sinisterness and vileness of the churchmen, brutalness and cruelness of the Inquisition, prurience and impudicity of the noblesse, and tyranny and brutalness of the royalty through the persecution of Esmeralda, an innocent lady. In the book, the first to persecute her was the suffragan, a powerful figure in the Notre Dame, who crazily persecuted her since his evil desire could not be satisfied; the second was the Inquisition which tortured her and invented injustice; the next was the noblesse who hit the innocent soul spiritually and finally it was the King who ordered to hang the witch and brutally suppressed the masses who tried to save Esmeralda.
