This book is the unique biography of Lei Zhen, the warrior respected by Hu Shi, Tang Degang, Long Yingtai and Fu Guoyong. His story is worth reading in this authoritarian regime. During the postwar democratic constitutionalism movement in Taiwan, Lei Zhen is an important figure that serves as a link between past and future. He and Hu Shi created the Free China Semimonthly which advocates democracy, freedom and constitutionalism. Many liberal intellectuals gathered in Taiwan and commented on politics in public forums. The traditional commenting on politics of Chinese intellectuals were brought into full play at that times. Lei Zhen (1897-1979), also named Jinghuan, was born in Changxing of Zhejiang province and his original family home is in Henan province. He studied abroad in Japan where he joined the Chinese Revolutionary Party (Kuomintang) at his early ages, then he graduated from the School of Law of Japan Kyoto Imperial University. He devoted himself into politics after he returned to China, he has been the vice secretary general of the national political council, secretary general of the Political Consultative Conference, a representative and the vice secretary general of the constituent national assembly, minister without portfolio of the Executive Yuan, design committee member of the reform commission of KMT and presidential advisor. The true beginning of Lei Zhens life career is when he went to Taiwan and created and hosted the Free China Semimonthly together with Hu Shi. He was devoted into advocating and practicing freedom of speech, he proposed and participated in the establishment of opposition party. He challenged the authoritarian regime, tried to change the dictatorship of the KMT and provided a strong support for the political reform in Taiwan after several years.
