Outstanding Artistic Merits, Combined With The Reliably Established Identity Of The Donor And Date Of Creation, Place The Nerezi Frescoes Among Key Monuments In The History Of Byzantine Art. Systematic Research Began In The 1920s And Primarily Sought To Identify Links With Later Komnenian Painting, And Also The Impact Of The Constantinople Church Councils Of 1156 And 1157. This Study Proves That The Nerezi Style Is The Result Of A Unique Synthesis Of The Classical And Expressive Tendencies Whose Opposition Determined Most 12th-century Art From The 1120s Onwards. The Iconography Of The Monument Is Studied By Primarily Taking Into Account Its Affiliation To A Monastery. Published Monastic Typika Of The 11th To 12th Centuries And The Hymnographic Works Noted There Allow Us To Shed New Light On The Programme.
