This book describes the complicated life of Yuan Shikai, the leader of the Northern Warlords. In 1859, Yuan Shikai was born in a bureaucratic landlord family in Xiangcheng, Henan. His father generation had a successful official career and Yuan Shikai's ambition was also big. He participated in the imperial examinations but was failed. He was frustrated and even if he got married and became a father, he was still a young ruffian. In 1881, Yuan Shikai accomplished nothing and decided to run away home to join the army in Dengzhou. In 1912, the Provisional Senate voted all 17 tickets to Yuan Shikai for his succession of interim President and the number of tickets he got was one more than Sun Yat-Sen in election as the President.
