This book mainly tells an ordinary soldier Laodans experiences in some major battles in the Sino-Japan War: Battle of Xuzhou, Garden Entrance, Wuhan, Changsha, and Changde. Laodan was a humble farmer, but was forced to go to the battle field, suffering from gunfire, fear, and despair and then becoming a brave and bold soldier. He witnessed thoroughly the cruelty of war. His peers died one after another in the battle field, however, he survived though is disabled. The author gives a refined and vivid description of characters and psychological characterizations as well as the brutal war scenes. The author skillfully embeds historical facts into literary works so that people feel like being on-site.
