The author tells how audiences of Chinese painting in China and other countries have shaped the great art traditions of Chinese painting incontrovertibly. He believes the audiences in China are crucial to the evolution of Chinese painting. From depicting the works being viewed, he introduces to readers the ideal types of audiences-gentry, emperors, businessmen, nation and people. In discussing the change of the audiences of Chinese art, the author stresses it is very hard to summarize the composition of Chinese painting due to the multiformity of the images of Chinese culture. Through exploring the complex relations between artistic works and audiences, we may have new understanding of the formation and transformation of the concept ""Chinese painting"".
