Maugham came to China during 1919 to the winter of 1920. At that time, he was 45 years old. He traveled along the Yangtze River and produced this book. This is a set of stories about trip to China, once preserved as materials for a novel. It totals 58 pieces. The readers are people in the U.K. of course. Maugham showed to his compatriot a picture of antique beauty and eastern style.
