The book tells a lot of stories happened in the Great Cultural Revolution. The highlight among the novellas is XiuxiuThe Sent-Down Girl which tells a story between the educated girl Wenxiu desiring to return to the city and the local Tibetan Laojin. Wenxiu sells her body for going back to the city, but such a sacrifice would not change the opportunity. Full of anger, Laojin, taking Wenxiu, makes a scene in headquarter. At last, he shoots Wenxiu and kills himself.
