Urged on by politicians, the protagonist Paul Bäumer and his schoolmates join the Germany army shortly after the start of World War I, fighting in the meat-grinder like trench warfare at the front. Their ideal and belief, their passion for life and their knowledge about the world are all destroyed by the bloody facts. His schoolmates and comrades die in succession in the battles. The battlefield turns to be the tomb of soldiers without names. The cruelty and horror of war and the yearning of soldiers for peace present human beings' sorrow without tears. In the end, the protagonist is killed at the front just before the arrival of peace.
