Landlord Zhang was shot in land reform and his family members died or became insane thereafter. Before villagers rejoicing with wild excitement when getting land, agricultural cooperation movement had swept around the whole nation and people joined in the big rice bowl system. Then great leap forward forced villiagers to break all the metals in family to participate in the steel-making movement. Because of failure to tend farming, output reduced while advocation for high yield started. So people made false report of crop yield which led to the occurrence of famine in many places. Laoyoulin in Cheng Family starved to death on bed. When the starvation had not been solved, the cultural revolution swooped on the whole nation. People ruined temples and graves. Laoyanxun in Sun family was beaten to death for trying to protect his ancestors graves, and his family were broken up.
