This book includes four works of Peter Handke: the novel Der Chinese des Schmerzes and three travel literature works, namely The Dreamer's Farewell to the Ninth Country, A Journey to the Rivers: Justice for Serbia and A Summary Addendum to a Winter's Journey. In Der Chinese des Schmerzes, the painful Chinese, a mysterious stranger in the protagonist's dream, becomes the metaphor of the protagonist in overcoming the inner pain again and again; the three observations and travel literature works mark the new creative period of Handke and reflect his fearless justice conscience in the face of the severe political instability in Europe.
