Professor Taylor's first study of mathematical practitioners is a chronicle of teachers, textbook writers, instrument makers, navigators, land surveyors and map-makers during the period 1485-1714, when English science made its first significant and swift advances. Great or familiar names - Newton, Hariot, Dee, Mercator, Wren, Hooke, Tompion - occur, but the story as a whole is concerned with the more humble but no less devoted men whose work created the climate in which advances were possible.
