Flight, expulsion, and integration after World War II have been given ever-increasing attention in recent years. Therewith, the drama of events leading to expulsion often overshadow laborious beginnings in the new country; years of construction and slow integration have in retrospect been interpreted as a success story. However, there was not a uniform process of integration, but rather different "integrations" in Germany, delayed or accelerated, impeded or promoted by the particular policy, the attitude of the host society to the newcomers, and also by the internal positioning of the displaced people to their fate.
