This is the complete and extended edition of the monographic study published in an abridged edition in 2005. It covers the last period of Anna Akhmatova's life and traces the history of her original poetic and prosaic conceptions; explores the circumstances under which Akhmatova's texts were published in the USSR and abroad; shows how her final ideas and judgements were being formed against a backdrop of ideological processes in both the Soviet official sphere and the uncensored subculture. The book introduces many hitherto unknown archival materials and printed sources. Comments and historical excurses take most of the book. Roman Timenchuk (b. 1945), Professor of the Jerusalem University, is a specialist in Anna Akhmatova and at large in Russian and European poetry and prose, esthetics of soviet culture, and life and literature of the Russian-Jewish emigration.
