For over 40 years the United States has vacillated between interventionism and withdrawal while struggling to formulate a coherent policy toward South Asia. The author has written an analysis of how Washington determines its South Asia policy. Situating case studies of US policy in four major South Asian crises in the broader context of Washington's foreign policy, the study demonstrates how not only the degree of involvement, but also the policy-making process, varied dramatically from crisis to crisis and from administration to administration.
