This is the memoirs of a professor of Princeton University, a former the Cossack officer, Grigorii Chebotarev (b. 1899). The memoir covers all his life but most of the book is about the unsuccessful attempt to defend the Russian Empire against the Bolsheviks in the first days of the 1917 October revolution and the participation of Cossacks in the White movement. The author refutes the common perception that the Cossacks fought to separate their land from the Russian state. Introduction by G.F. Keenan.
