The objective of this book is to develop the critical reading skills of intermediate Latin students through the evaluation and analysis of Trojan War source materials that encompass a broad range of points of view, biases, and evidence. By using the “eyewitness accounts” of later Latin works on the Trojan War, students will put various heroes “on trial” for their actions. The book contains forty chapters arranged in three sections (Causa Belli; Bella, Horrida Bella; and Fuit Ilium) covering the entirety of the war and its aftermath in 165 passages. Troy on Trial is a standalone text that includes all necessary vocabulary lists and reading questions: it can be either used as a supplement to an AP Latin high school curriculum for a more in-depth knowledge of the events of Aeneid 2 or at the college/postbaccalaureate level as an intermediate Latin text or as an introduction to historical methodology.
