Since the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, Zionism has claimed Jerusalem as its own. Home to three major religions, this holy city has long been an intensely contested site where each faith has strived to preserve its vital interests— its shrines, sanctuaries and the presence of its adherents. But it is obvious today that neither Islam nor Christianity will allow Israeli domination of Jerusalem. As the leaders of the Middle East attempt to forge a lasting peace in the region, this holy place is likely to emerge as the focus of negotiations and bone of contention of the peace process. The author of this book argues that continued Israeli intransigence on the issue of Jerusalem will likely prove perilous to peace and stability in the Middle East.
