This monograph studies the history of the secret police in Russia, the Third Division (Tret'e Otdelenie) and later the Gendarme Corps (Korpus Zhandarmov) from their formation to the end of the reign of Nicholas the First: 1826-1855. The author reviews the existing historiography and sources on the subject, organizational structure and methods of work of the Third Division, the main areas and objects of their activities: Decembrists, oppositional journalism and literature, peasants and workers rebellions, secret societies, etc. This book is the result of more than 30 years of studies of Andrei Chukarev.
