This is the second book of memoirs by Dmitrii Bobyshev (b. 1936, Leningrad), one of the group of poets and friends, including J. Brodsky, A. Naiman, and Evg. Rein, who communicated closely with Anna Akhmatova (so called "Akhmatova's orphans"). Bobyshev emigrated in 1979 and taught Russian literature at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The author positions himself as an unofficial poet who is looking for recognition, but not at the cost of his internal freedom. His second book is about his own literary strategy, his meetings with old Russian friends and contemporaries - poets, painters, political dissidents, etc. He creates portraits of people, some of whom are well known and others who are wrongly forgotten.
