A major contribution to our knowledge of the Early Byzantine City and the way it is perceived by its dwellers. The author applies an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the Early Byzantine cities. Taking into consideration numerous literary sources and combining them with the archaeological evidence of various Byzantine cities excavated all over the Mediterranean, the author examines the changing functions of civic space.
