Literacy Alive began in the spring of 2007 with a commitment to promote literacy among the children and young adults throughout New Mexico's southwestern communities of Silver City, Bayard, Cliff, Gila, Hurley, Mimbres, and Santa Clara by featuring local New Mexico and Arizona authors and their books. From this, Young Voices of Silver City was born. Enjoy their voices. "The love of reading is one of the most important gifts we can give children. Thank you Literacy Alive in Silver City for your excellent literacy project." - Rudolfo Anaya "Through the Literacy Alive project the young people of Silver City and the surrounding communities have been inspired, and through their writings and art their Young Voices remind us that New Mexico is rich with its historical, cultural and natural heritage. Thank you Literacy Alive for bringing this project to our community and schools so the Young Voices of our community could be part of the celebration of 100 years of statehood." - James R. Marshall, Mayor, Silver City
