Mattie Kaczlowicz is an ordinary man facing impossible choices.
Plonsk, Poland, 1942, and Mattie Kaczlowicz’s life is about to change forever. When the Nazis deport his beloved wife to an unknown “work camp” in the East, his heart is shattered. Two weeks later, it’s his turn, and he finds himself crushed in a freight car, traveling towards a fate that is already sealed for him. After three hellish days with no food or water, the train comes to a stop, but his relief is short-lived when the doors are thrown open, and he realizes his destination is Auschwitz, the deadliest Nazi concentration camp.

During the next 861 days, Mattie endures disease, torture, and starvation. Then under the threat of death, he is forced to become a reluctant instrument in the Nazi’s killing program. In his struggle to survive, the lines between right and wrong become blurred, and he is powerless to do anything except fight to stay alive.
Through determination and bravery, Mattie survives the horrors of Auschwitz and, after liberation, begins a new life in the United States. He is happy and content until events force him to face secrets from his past that will change his life forever.

This is Mattie’s story, the sequel to A Thousand Mothers.
