This book is about the royal theater of epochs of the Baroque and the Enlightenment, and its sets. It's not surprising that Russia doesn't stand alone, but was involved in the common European trends. The author picked up most typical, wide-spread and substantial examples of decorative schemes of the "Big royal court play," analyzes the evolution of classic iconographic schemes and popular plots over the two hundred year history, and demonstrates the gradual weakening of the symbolic function of theater architecture and sets as one of forms of representation of the monarch's power. The monograph studies in detail the drafts of sets and their imprints for theater productions of the 17th - 18th centuries. Profusely illustrated.
