Collected in this volume are nineteen selected contributions written by twenty-six scholars in the field, in honour of their teacher and colleague, Professor Joseph Marin.

In fulfillment of his wish and in honour of his memory the present volume has been named Mechanics of the Solid State. It provides a list of the 162 papers and six books contributed by Dr. Marin to engineering literature, and a short description of his professional life.
