Twenty-three papers, mostly taken from a colloquium held in Menaggio in 2001, examine the culture of Nero's court and its transmission across the empire. The papers, most of which are in Italian or German, discuss specific artworks, buildings or texts as well as more general views on the nature of Neronian culture and Nero's contribution to the arts. Specific subjects include wall paintings in the Villa of Poppaea in Oplontis, coins, Lucan, Seneca and Petronius.
