Due to the extensive spread and dispersion of Judaism, places of teaching and religious life were established early on beside the temple. This volume reflects on the origins of the synagogue, the scholarship and Jewish gathering in the Diaspora from Babylonia to Alexandria and Rome, the House of Wisdom as exemplified by Ben Siras, and the spread of the House of Wisdom culture after the destruction of the Temple.
