The author states that almost all textbooks on the history of Old Rus are based on one source - Povest' Vremennykh Let (Story of historical years), an anthology of the best known manuscripts of Old Rus (12th-17th centuries). However, this book was a collection of stories, not chronicles, and cannot be considered as a reliable source. The current book is an attempt to describe what we know from other sources on the history of Kievan Rus, its leaders and their origin, from sources other than the Story and how it is different from the official version.
