First published in 1819, this memoir covers Whitelocke's disastrous South American adventure in 1806, the Penisular War, the Walcheren expedition and the Battle of Waterloo - where he narrowly escaped death. A cannonball struck the ground in front of him, knocked him head-over-heels and shattered his musket.
