This is a reprint of a book (1890) by the outstanding Russian historian Dmitrii Ilovaiskii (1832-1920) about the origin of Rus. The author of many authoritative textbooks in Russian history, Ilovaiskii was an opponent of the so called Norse theory of the origin of Rus, doubted the authenticity of Russian chronicles, and showed that they reflected the interests and views of Russian princes.
