The Parlement of Paris

Shennan (European history, U. of Lancaster) argues that an examination of the Parlement's various roles provides the best clue to an understanding of the role of the French monarchy itself. He shows how the Parlement became a focal point of opposition to royal arbitrariness as the crown grew in power during the 15th and 16th centuries. This volume is the only one in English to offer an interpretation of the Parlement's judicial and political role from its inception in the mid-13th centuries until its fall during the 1789 revolution.
