Manuel E. De Veyra is a graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University (H.S. '26 and Bachelor of Arts '30). He finished his medical studies in 1935 at the University of Santo Tomas. Receiving a Fulbright scholarship, he took post graduate medicine at Harvard and Tufts in Boston, Massachusetts, and trained at the John Hopkins medical institutions. A native of Manila, he was born on 11 October 1909 to Jaime and Sofia de Veyra. He is married to Rosario S. Avila of Cebu, where the couple later chose to settle. They have three children: Rosario, Manuel, Jr., and Ma. Teresa. Aside from being a practicing cardiologist, Dr. de Beyra, for a time, taught as instructor and then as Assistant Professor in Clincal Medicine at the UST College of Medicine, and later at the Southwestern University and the Cebu Institute of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Philippine College of Physicians and a Fellow and Diplomate of the Philippine College of Cardiologists. A very active Rotarian, he is a member, and past president of the Rotary Club of Cebu, and a past governor of District 386. Dr. de Veyra has always shown a keen interest in reading and writing. While in college, he was editor-in-chief of the Ateneo Monthly, the Aegis school annual, and the newsweekly Guidon. During pre-war days, he had articles published in the Philippines Free Press and the Graphic Maagazine. Even today, he had a regular column in his Rotary Club bulletin. However, it is only now that he has finally found time to publish his first book, feeling very strongly that there is still much to be said about Bataan, this time from a medical doctor's perception of the war.
