When the Emperor Julian abandoned Christianity, attempted to reorganize paganism, and died mysteriously in the course of an unsuccessful Persian war, legends about his misdeeds arose rapidly among the Christians. This Romance is one of the results, including the stories of his sacrificing humans for oracular purposes. Nevertheless, it is written in a clear and literate Syriac, free of Greek constructions. Richard Gottheil presents this work into an accessible student text, with a complete glossary in English and German.
