"The Injustice to Dou E (Hardcover)" tells that for taking merit and fame in the capital, the poor scholar Dou Tianzhang from Chuzhou is forced to sell his youngest daughter Duanyun to the Cai family as a child bride, and she is renamed Dou E. Dou E¡¯s husband dies after their marriage, leaving behind Dou E and her mother-in-law to depend on each other. Unfortunately for them, the hooligan Zhang lv¡¯er and his father move into Dou E¡¯s house to force Dou E and her mother-in-law to marry them respectively, but she refuses. Zhang Lv¡¯er plots to poison Dou E¡¯s mother-in-law, only to kill his own father with poison. Zhang Lv¡¯er imputes his father¡¯s death to Dou E. Zhang frames Dou E for murdering his father, and the prefecture governor subjects her to various tortures to force her to confess. For saving her mother-in-law, Dou E admits to the murder and is sentenced to death by beheading. Bearing a sense of injustice, before her execution she swears that her innocence will be proven if the following three events occur after she dies: her blood will spill on white silk; there will be heavy snowfall in the sixth lunar month; Chuzhou will experience a drought for three years. The three events really happen after Dou E¡¯s death. Three years later, Dou E¡¯s father Dou Tianzhang, who has become a lianfangshi (a senior government official) orders a reinvestigation of the case and the truth finally comes to light. Dou E is proclaimed innocent while Zhang Lv¡¯er receives his due punishments.
