John of Ephesus (c. 507-589), a bishop and missionary, is known mostly for his historical and hagiographical works. His ecclesiastical history survives in part and he also composed a collection of eastern saints lives. The latter work and portions of the former were printed by Land in his Anecdota Syriaca (available from Gorgias Press), and the present volume contains an annotated Latin translation of these texts, prefaced by a lengthly list of emendations to the Syriac text. Maps of Amid and Constantinople are included at the end, as is an index of names and subjects. This important presentation of a unique historical resource will be of interest especially to readers concerned with 6th century history and the early period of the Syrian Orthodox Church.
