Alexander Chudakov (1938-2005) was a Russian philologist and writer. His novel A Gloom is Cast Upon the Ancient Steps (Lozhitsia Mgla na Starye Stupeni) was awarded the Russian Booker Prize. The novel depicts how the authentic Russia survived under the Bolshevik yoke, and why the Russian people did not lose their feeling of freedom.
