Published in 1897, John Gwynn's The Apocalypse of St. John in a Syriac Version Hitherto Unknown was "the first Syriac book issued from the Dublin University Press." (from the Preface) Based on his study of a manuscript obtained on loan from the personal library of the Earl of Crawford, Gwynn prepared a work in two parts. Part I was comprised of an Introductory Dissertation in which Gwynn argued for a Philoxenian origin for the text and provided a reconstruction of "the underlying Greek"; Part II was a careful edition of the original Syriac text intended to be a precise representation of the manuscript, retaining as far as possible even the formatting of the original.
