Gottfried Ernst Groddeck (1762-1825) gilt als Begründer der wissenschaftlichen Philologie in Polen. In Danzig geboren, studierte er klassische Philologie in Göttingen und war ab 1786 Hauslehrer und Bibliothekar des polnischen Fürsten Czartoryski. 1804 wurde er Professor an der Universität Wilna. Seine Korrespondenz ist eine wichtige Quelle für den Einfluss der deutschen Philologie und für die Geistesgeschichte in Polen und Rußland.
