This is the fourth volume of the complete collected works of V. Propp (1895-1970), a well known Russian scholar in the history and theory of folklore. The volume contains his major work (first published in 1955 and not published since 1958) on the Russian heroic epos: bylinas and epic tales. An afterword by N.A. Krinichanaia (pp.606-625) analyzes the importance of Propp's work for Russian folklore studies. Extensive commentary, bibliography, name index and index of characters make this book a textbook on fairy tales.
