Archaeological predictive modelling, Ebert argues, has stagnated in recent years with its proponents resisting the temptation to experiment with tried and tested models. Four new models for predicting site locations using economic, cultural and environmental variables are presented here in relation to boreal forest hunter-gatherers. Ebert tests the merits of each of these variables, as well as optimal foraging theory and the general effectiveness of ecological models of cultural behaviour. The dataset for his case study is presented, the four models applied and tested, and their successes and usefulness evaluated.
