Using first-person accounts, this book provides scholarly documentation of the history of Soviet and Russian contributions to underwater acoustics. It describes how the development of underwater acoustics in Russia was influenced by WWI, WWII, and the Cold War, by government bureaucracy, by the economic collapse of the Soviet Union, and by the dedicated efforts of some of the greatest minds of the 20th century. Sonar arrays, submarine hydroacoustic equipment, and the role of the Radio Engineering Department at Naval RIE are some subjects explored. The book is for engineers and scientists engaged in underwater acoustics, for historians, and for present day researchers who want to learn about Russian scientific contributions. Godin is affiliated with the University of Colorado. Palmer is affiliated with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. There is no subject index.
