Wine makes its appearance in Britain in the early 1st century BC accompanied by `a rich social and ritual baggage'. Based on the author's thesis, this study looks at the context of the introduction of wine and its use in social and funerary settings. Carver addresses the question of whether wine could be considered as a traded commodity at this time and assess links with the salt industry at this time. Evidence from ancient sources and other literary and archaeological material are discussed and comparative material is sought in Continental Europe, particularly France.
