A former Professor of History at Southampton University and of English at Warwick, he has been a Leverhulme Research Professor, Mellon Professor at The California Institute of Technology and visiting professor to the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, the Stanford Humanities Centre, the Humanities Research Centre at the Australian National University and Humboldt Prize professor at the Max Planck Institute Goettingen. A historian of culture and politics, he has been a pioneer in bringing to the study of the English Renaissance state the perspectives and methods of other disciplines: literary criticism, the history of the book, reception studies and studies in visual culture. His books include Selling the Tudor Monarchy: Authority and Image in 16th Century England (Yale) and Remapping Early Modern England: The Culture of 17th Century Politics (CUP).
