The 16th century takes a special place in the history of Russian-Crimean relations. The Russian-Crimean union which was formed against the Golden Horde (Akhmet kingdom), turned out to be very short. Yesterday’s allies Ivan the Terrible and Devlet-Girei became open enemies. The new feud ended in the Molodino battle. The Crimean Khan Devlet Girei, together with the Turkish Sultan, planned the conquest of the middle and lower Volga territories and the renewal of Tatar power over Moscow. The battle of Molodino, 60 km from Moscow, that took place in 1572 is deemed here to have an importance equal to that of Borodino in 1812, the biggest battle in the Russian war against Napoleon.
